Webmasters know that link exchange improves page position in the search engines. Link exchange is very important in achieving high link popularity and page ranking. Many savvy webmasters spend most of their ranking efforts in sending out email requests for reciprocal link exchange and/or by using a link exchange service. Reciprocal link exchange is a significant strategy.
However, many webmasters do not fully comprehend how to do it correctly, or dilute link effectiveness by putting hundreds of links on a single links page. Some webmasters even deliberately contrive ways to minimize the Page Rank flowing back to link partners.
Result: Page Rank fails to grow proportionate to purchasing high PR links or to submitting to quality directories, and the time required for the effort expended becomes less productive.
As the link exchange marketplace grows, link exchange effectiveness is minimized. But the more significant result of bad linking is in a recent algorithm development. Google (not Yahoo, yet) is bouncing or booting (not banning) some high-ranking sites for irrelevant, dissimilar linking. The search engine optimization craze for linking has led to the practice of linking to any agreeable site, relevant or not, and Google has caught on to this "Linking Spam." The PR of some of these sites has not diminished, but they have been removed from high-ranking positions. Some, even with #1 position for their primary keywords, have actually disappeared from view!
